При съхраняване на твърдите горива се окисляват съдържащите се в тях органични съединения и това води до нежелани физични и химични промени. Физичните промени (изветряване) се изразяват във влошаване на външния вид на горивото - блясъка намалява или въобще изчезва, по повърхността се появяват различни оцветявания в резултат на разлагане на някои минерални соли, въглищата стават по-крехки и могат да се разпаднат на дртебни късове. Химичните промени са свързани с окисляване на С и Н, в резултат на което се получава СО2 и Н2О, следва намаляване на съдържанието на летливи вещества и намаляване способността им за коксуване.
Протичащите химични процеси са екзотермични (отделяне на топлина), което може да предизвика самозапалване. Твърдите горива трябва да се съхраняват на закрито, под навес, стифирани на фигури, като се препоръчва фигурата да е пресечена пирамида.
